How many calories are in a full English breakfast?

A full English with two sausages, two rashers, an egg, beans, grilled tomato and mushrooms and a slice of buttered toast comes to about 900 kcal. The sausages are the single biggest line on it. Most people assume the fry-up is ruined by the bread.

Where each number comes from

Composition tables list ingredients, not dinners. There is no row anywhere for this plate, so it is built from its parts, and the preparation assumed for each part is written next to it, because that assumption is usually worth more calories than the ingredient.

Why you will see 600 to 1400 kcal quoted for this

Cafe plates run high because of portion count rather than anything exotic: three sausages instead of two, fried bread instead of toast, a second egg.

Which is why this page shows the sum instead of asserting a total. Build the plate you actually eat and the number is yours rather than an average of strangers.

Common questions

How many calories are in a full English breakfast?
About 900 kcal for a home plate with two sausages, two rashers, an egg, beans, tomato, mushrooms and buttered toast. A cafe version with a second egg and two slices runs closer to 1,100.
What is the highest calorie item in a fry-up?
The sausages, at about 310 kcal for two. Bacon is roughly half that, and the beans, tomato and mushrooms together come to under 200.
Is a full English a bad breakfast?
It is a big one, with a lot of protein in it. Whether it works depends on the rest of the day rather than on the plate itself.
How do I make a fry-up lower in calories?
Grill instead of fry, skip the butter, and drop to one sausage. That is around 230 kcal and the plate still looks like a fry-up.
