How many calories are in a thali?

A full thali with two chapatis, rice, a ladle of dal, a vegetable curry, raita and a roasted papadum comes to about 810 kcal. The plate looks enormous because it is six small servings instead of one large one, and that is the same reason it carries 29 g of protein and 17 g of fibre.

The plate, as served

Two chapatis, a serving of rice, a ladle of tempered dal, a vegetable curry, three tablespoons of raita and a roasted papadum.

The ring is sized by calories, not grams: protein and carbs are 4 kcal a gram, fat is 9. Drawn by grams, fat would look like a sliver of what it actually contributes.

Figures are the sum of the household portions listed in the composition table, rounded to the nearest 5 kcal per component.

Where each number comes from

Composition tables list ingredients, not dinners. There is no row anywhere for this plate, so it is built from its parts, and the preparation assumed for each part is written next to it, because that assumption is usually worth more calories than the ingredient.

Why you will see 500 to 1200 kcal quoted for this

How many bowls came with it, and whether bread was on the plate at all. A rice-only thali and a restaurant one with a paneer bowl are 520 kcal apart, and neither is unusual.

Which is why this page shows the sum instead of asserting a total. Build the plate you actually eat and the number is yours rather than an average of strangers.

Common questions

How many calories are in a thali?
About 810 for a full one: two chapatis, rice, dal, a vegetable curry, raita and a roasted papadum. A rice-only thali is nearer 590, and a restaurant thali with a paneer bowl added reaches 1,110.
Is a thali a healthy meal?
It is one of the better built plates on this site. The full version carries 29 g of protein and 17 g of fibre, which is more fibre than any other plate here. The size is the thing to watch, not the composition.
What is the heaviest part of a thali?
The bread and the rice together, at 415 of the 810. The curries look like the expensive part and are not: the dal and the vegetable curry come to 310 between them.
How do I make a thali lighter without giving anything up?
Take the rice or the chapatis, not both. That is 220 kcal off with every bowl still on the plate, and it is the change people notice least.

Point the camera at anything.
