MyCalorieCoach

MyCalorieCoach: a Cal AI alternative that coaches, not just counts

Cal AI is a photo calorie counter. Point, shoot, get a number. MyCalorieCoach takes the same photo and then keeps talking, because the number was never the hard part. It knows your cuisine, and it sizes tonight around the food you have said you will never cut. Both cost about $29.99 a year. The trial is 14 days here against 3 days there.

Why people go looking for a Cal AI alternative

A number is not a plan

Knowing that plate was 780 kcal does not tell you what to have for dinner, and it is no help at all on the second day of a wedding weekend. Counting is the easy half.

It is owned by MyFitnessPal now

MyFitnessPal acquired Cal AI in March 2026. That is not a criticism of the app, but it does mean the roadmap belongs to the incumbent it was built to compete with.

Three days is not a trial

Three days is long enough to test the camera. Whether an app changes anything about how you eat takes a couple of weeks with a weekend inside them. That is why the trial here is 14 days.

Photo estimates are still estimates

Every photo calorie app guesses portions from an image, ours included. The difference is that a guess here is labelled as one, and the calorie figure comes from a grounding step in code rather than from the vision model.

Where Cal AI is the better choice

If any of these matter more to you than the rest of this page, stay where you are. It is a good app and we would rather you kept using it than paid us for the wrong fit.

Common questions

What is a good Cal AI alternative?
It depends what you are shopping for. Several photo counters do the camera part, some of them faster. If you want the photo and then something that coaches you through the rest of the day, that is a different category, and it is the one MyCalorieCoach is in.
Is Cal AI owned by MyFitnessPal?
Yes. MyFitnessPal announced the acquisition of Cal AI in March 2026.
Is MyCalorieCoach cheaper than Cal AI?
They are about the same on the headline annual price, around $29.99. The difference is the trial: 14 days here against 3 days there, and our founding price is locked for three years. Cal AI price-tests frequently, so check it yourself; ours was checked on 2026-09-01.
How accurate are photo calorie counters?
A photo can identify a dish well and estimate a portion only roughly, which is true of every app in this category including ours. What we do differently is refuse to present an estimate as a measurement: estimates are tagged, and the calorie figure comes from a grounding step in code rather than from the vision model guessing.
Does MyCalorieCoach work for Indian, Sri Lankan or other non-Western food?
Yes. There is no food database to be missing from, so a plate of rice and curry, a dosa or a kottu is handled the same way as a sandwich. You pick your cuisine when you start and the coach works in it from the first message.
